Game Mechanics as the name might hint is how the game works such as the actions and the results of your action, what happens if you run this way or hit this person, things like that. Game Design is the design of the surrounding area and everything else, such as the characters (main one included) the cars (if any) and trees, sand, water, dirt, grass, snow, things like that. These are what holds the actions. Without design, who will hold the actions? Gamification is a factor that uses both game Mechanics and Game Design and combines them.
